Family Photography in Ware: Relaxed, Real, and Beautifully Hertfordshire

Mike Silver Photography Ware, Hertfordshire

The best family photos don’t look posed

Because the ones you’ll actually want on your wall never are. They’re the moment your youngest trips over their own feet and everyone loses it. Your eldest deciding they’re far too cool to hold hands, then doing it anyway thirty seconds later. The dog appearing from nowhere at exactly the wrong moment. Golden light coming through the trees at Ware Priory and you didn’t even notice it, but I did.

That’s what I’m here for.

I’m Mike, a family and portrait photographer based in Ware, Hertfordshire. I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the sessions that feel the most relaxed produce the best images. So I don’t shout directions or try to engineer perfect poses. I hang back, let everyone settle into things, and get the shots that actually look like you.

Where I shoot around Ware and Hertford

One of the things I love about working in this part of Hertfordshire is how many genuinely beautiful spots are right on the doorstep. Most families don’t realise until we’re standing in the middle of them.

The River Lea meadows through Ware are hard to beat for an outdoor family shoot. Open space, mature trees, and the kind of light in the late afternoon that does half the work for me. Ware Priory grounds have a different feel — more structured, lovely old stonework in the background, still really relaxed as a location.

Hertford is just a few minutes away and I shoot there regularly too. The Castle Grounds are great for families who want that timeless feel. Big open green space, interesting backdrops, and almost always quiet enough to let the kids move around freely.

Further out, the Lee Valley regional park opens up a lot of options through the seasons. Bluebell woods in spring are a big one — if you’ve been thinking about a bluebell family photoshoot in Hertfordshire, this area is genuinely one of the best places to do it.

What a session with me actually looks like

Most family sessions run around 90 minutes. The first 20 minutes are usually a bit lively — kids working out what’s going on, testing the situation, doing their thing. I don’t try to fight that. I just wait it out, keep things moving, and let everyone warm up at their own pace.

By the halfway mark, it tends to shift. The kids are off exploring. The adults have stopped worrying about what to do with their hands. That’s when the real images happen.

“I know getting everyone to smile at the same time is pretty much impossible. So I don’t try to force it. I let the kids run around, explore and just be themselves, and I capture the real stuff as it happens.” — Mike Silver

I shoot year-round across Hertfordshire

Every season works — they’re just different.

Spring

Bluebells, soft green light, and the most requested season of the year. Sessions in April and May fill up fast — if you’re keen, February or March is the time to book.

Summer

Long evenings and the flexibility to shoot later when the harsh midday light has dropped. July and August along the Lea Valley are genuinely beautiful.

Autumn

The colour through the woodland around Hertford in October is the kind of thing that makes people come back year after year specifically for that palette.

Winter

Underrated. Bare trees, soft grey light, and the right location. Some of my favourite images have come from December shoots.

If you’d rather start with something shorter, my seasonal mini shoots in Ware are a good entry point — same quality of images, lower investment, set dates through the year.

If your family is growing

If you’ve got a baby on the way, there’s a natural sequence that a lot of families don’t think about until it’s passed.

A maternity shoot captures something that changes quickly — a few weeks between bump and baby. I do outdoor and studio-style maternity sessions across Hertfordshire that are straightforward, relaxed, and honest. No clinical setups or awkward posing. You can find out more on my maternity photography page, and a lot of families book both sessions together as a package.

Ware, Hertford, and everywhere in between

I’m based in Ware and cover a decent area of Hertfordshire. If you’re in Hertford, Hoddesdon, Cheshunt, Welwyn Garden City, or anywhere nearby, you’re easily within reach. I come to you, and the right location is usually closer than people think.

If you’ve been looking for a family photographer near you in the Ware or Hertford area — this is a good place to start.

Ready to get something booked?

Spring and autumn dates tend to go first. If you’ve got a season in mind, it’s worth reaching out sooner rather than later.
